Never a company to rest on their laurels, Square capitalized on Final Fantasy VII’s meteoric success to remove any doubt they were the de facto kings of the JRPG. With Enix’s Dragon Quest on the back burner as Yuji Horii struggled to transition the series to 3D, other developers and publishers stepped in to reap rewards from the suddenly massive audience in the West. Namco debuted their Tales series with a couple of impressive titles, including my favorite, Tales of Destiny; Konami filled a niche with their politically charged Suikoden series, and Capcom’s Breath of Fire series finally developed a personality of its own with its third and fourth entries. But despite these successes, nobody was in the same stratosphere as Square and their string of titles selling in the millions.
